My Daughter is Dying - Mark 5:23

Mark wrote how, “there came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet”, and in chapter five and verse twenty-three of his book, Mark shares how Jairus said, “My little daughter lies at the point of death” where we read:

And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lies at the point of death: I pray you, come and lay your hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.

The verse reads, “And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lies at the point of death: Mark began with the words, “and besought him greatly” or “and begged, plead, prayed and entreated Jesus with great passion and feeling”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “my little daughter” or “Jairus' small female progeny or daughter” “lies at the point of death” which means “is at the extreme last gasp and point of dying”. Mark shared how “Jairus” emphatically begged Jesus as he plead for the life of his “daughter” who was at the final “point” of dying.

The verse continues, I pray you, come and lay your hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.” Mark added the words, “I pray you” which means “Jairus begged, plead and entreated Jesus to” ,“come and lay your hands on her” or “arise and come forth and put His hands upon the daughter”, “that she may be healed” which means “so the little daughter may be rescued, made well, restored to health, preserved and made whole”; “and she shall live” or “and Jairus' daughter will remain alive, breathing and among the living”. Mark shared how “Jairus” emphatically desired for Jesus to “lay His hands” upon his daughter so she might be “restored to health” and kept alive.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how “Jairus” had a plan for his daughter's “healing”. Though he may not have understood exactly how it worked, “Jairus” needed only that Jesus would come and “touch” his daughter and she would be made whole. This man loved his daughter, and where he may have previously had rules about engaging Jesus, those rules were discarded because of his love for his daughter. Desperate people may come to Jesus because He is the answer to every problem they have. Those who are wise will realize each of these examples found in the book of Mark help readers to know that Jesus is the Messiah come from God, and regardless of their “station” in life, they best response a person may give is to humble themselves, plead with Jesus to help and yield their lives to Him regardless of what He chooses to do.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “went with him, and much people followed him” again, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
