The Formally Possessed Desiring to Go with Jesus - Mark 5:18

Mark wrote how Jesus told demons named Legion to come out of a man possessed with them. After Jesus cast the “unclean spirits” into pigs, the pigs ran violently down a steep place and were drowned in the sea. Mark continued by writing, “They that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts”, and in chapter five and verse eighteen of his book, Mark shares how, “he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him” where we read:

And when he was come into the ship,

he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.

The verse reads, “And when he was come into the ship, ... Mark began with the words, “and when he was come” or “and at the time and moment Jesus entered and came” “into the ship” which means “into the sailing vessel or boat”. Mark shared how Jesus complied with the people's request to leave and re-entered the “boat” in which He arrived upon their shore.

The verse goes on to say, “... he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.” Mark continued with the words, “he that had been possessed” which means “the man who formerly was controlled and ruled” “with the devil” which means “with the unclean spirits or demons” “prayed him” or “begged, beseeched and asked Jesus” “that he might be with him” which means “that the man could possibly go alongside and be beside Jesus”. Mark shared how the formerly possessed man asked Jesus to allow Him to go with Him as He left the area.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how this man who was once controlled by the devil and his agents, now desired to be a follower of Jesus. This man's life had been changed, and where he was once “possessed” by unclean spirits, he was now made pure and right minded by Jesus Christ. Those who are “controlled” by “demons” and their influence may come to Jesus and ask for deliverance from Satan's power, and Jesus is able to set them free. Regardless of the powerful influences that have ruled in their lives, Jesus said, “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised” (See Luke 4:18). Jesus also said, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” (See John 8:36) Let all who read these words “go with Jesus” and be set “free” of all other spiritual beings and devises that would keep them bound.

Next time Mark shares how, “Jesus suffered him not, but said unto him, go home to your friends”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
