Ezer Repairing - Nehemiah 3:19

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah went back to the city of Jerusalem and began to rebuild the wall. Among many people he employed was, Nehemiah” himself, who was “the son of Azbuk, the ruler of the half part of Bethzur, unto the place over against the sepulchers of David, and to the pool that was made, and unto the house of the mighty. After him repaired the Levites, Rehum the son of Bani. Next unto him repaired Hashabiah, the ruler of the half part of Keilah, in his part. After him repaired their brethren, Bavai the son of Henadad, the ruler of the half part of Keilah”and in chapter three and verse nineteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “next to him repaired Ezer”, where we read,

And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah,

another piece over against the going up to the armory at the turning of the wall.

The verse reads, And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, ... Nehemiah began with the words, “and next to him” or “and beside and in close proximity to him, Bavai” “repaired Ezer” which means “strengthened, hardened and made firm Ezer whose name means treasure” “the son of Jeshua” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Jeshua whose name means he is saved”, “the ruler of Mizpah” which means “the prince, leader, chief, chieftain and official belonging to Mizpah whose name means watchtower and was a place in Gilead of Jabbok and the location of Laban's cairn”. Nehemiah shared how “Ezer” who was the ruling official in “Mizpah” rebuilt the section of the wall beside “Bavai”.

The verse continues, “... another piece over against the going up to the armory at the turning of the wall.” Nehemiah added the words, “another piece” or “one other section or portion” “over against the going up to the armory” which means “across from the ascension toward the weapons, equipment and harness” “at the turning of the wall” or “where the corner structure or buttress belonging to the barrier wall was located”. Nehemiah shared how “Ezer” rebuilt the portion of the wall across from the place where the weapons and equipment were held and where the corner of the wall was located.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover through Nehemiah another man, “Ezer”, who was a “ruler” and yet involved himself in the rebuilding of the barrier wall. God's plan for the people of Jerusalem was being completed, and not only ordinary people were being used, but also their chieftains and officials as well. God promotes and demotes people in leadership, (See Daniel 2:21) and those who have yielded themselves to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of the world and was resurrected three days later will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and called into His perfect will and plan for their labor in His Kingdom. Let all who read these words consider the position God has placed them in, and use that position for the benefit of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Next time Nehemiah says, “after him Baruch … repaired”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
