In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah prayed to Jehovah God, “these are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power, and by your strong hand”, and in chapter one and verse eleven of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said to God, “let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant”, where we read,
O Lord, I beseech you, let now your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who desire to fear your name: and prosper, I pray you, your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.
The verse reads, “O Lord, I beseech you, let now your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who desire to fear your name:”. Nehemiah began with the words, “O Lord” or “O Adonay or the proper name of Jehovah God”, “I beseech you” which means “I, Nehemiah, entreat and pray to you, Jehovah God”, “let now your ear be attentive” or “allow and permit your, Jehovah God's, organ for hearing, perceiving and discerning to exist as hearkening and paying attention” “to the prayer” which means “to the oration, intercession, supplication and appeal” “of your servant” or “belonging to your, Jehovah God's, man of servile condition, slave and bondman” “and to the prayer”which means “and to the oration, intercession, supplication and appeal” “of your servants” or “belonging to Jehovah God's, men of servile condition, slave and bondmen”, “who desire to fear your name” which means “who, Nehemiah and the people of Israel, delight, have pleasure and favor revering, being afraid of and honoring your, Jehovah God's, fame, reputation and glory”. Nehemiah shared how He appealed to Jehovah God to allow Himself to pay attention to the oration of His bondman and the people of Israel who were His bondmen that delighted in revering and honoring Him.
The verse continues, “... and prosper, I pray you, your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.” Nehemiah added the words, “and prosper” or “and advance, make progressive, successful and profitable”, “I pray you” which means “I, Nehemiah, entreat and appeal to you, Jehovah God”, “your servant this day” or “your, Jehovah God's, slave, man of servile condition and bondman”, “and grant him mercy” which means “and give, bestow and consecrate upon him, Nehemiah, pity, compassion and tender love” “in the sight of this man” or “within the front and presence belonging to this male human being, the king”. “For I was the king's cupbearer” which means “because, since and on account that I, Nehemiah, existed as the royal ruler and leader's butler and attendant”. Nehemiah appealed to Jehovah God to make him who existed as God's bondmen to be profitable and to give him pity and tender love within the presence of the royal ruler because He was the “king's” butler and attendant.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about His prayer to Jehovah God to pay attention to his intercession. He was Jehovah God's bondman who had a passion for revering His fame, reputation and glory. He asked God to advance His way, extend to him his tender love and compassion within the presence of the royal ruler because he was the “king's” butler. Nehemiah tested the drinks of the king before he partook of them, and because his position was one of service, he knew he needed the favor of Jehovah God to give a request to the king. God wants us to have access to Him, and this is gained when we receive His Son Jesus whom He into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the grave three days later. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put us in a position of favor to “come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need”. (See Hebrews 4:16)
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Nehemiah say, “let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
