Showing Wonders to the Dead? - Psalms 88:10

In Psalms chapter eighty eight the Psalmist said to Jehovah God, “My eye mourns by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called daily upon you, I have stretched out my hands unto you”, and in chapter eighty eight and verse ten of Psalms the Psalmist asked Jehovah God, “will you show wonders to the dead?” where we read,

Will you show wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise you? Selah.

The verse begins, Will you show wonders to the dead? The Psalmist began with the words, “will you show wonders” or “shall you, Jehovah God, fashion, accomplish, make or produce extraordinary and hard to understand marvels or marvelous things” “to the dead” which means “to people who have died, been killed, executed and put to death”? The Psalmist asked Jehovah God whether He would fashion and produce extraordinary and marvelous deeds and acts toward people who have died

The verse continues, shall the dead arise and praise you? Selah. The Psalmist added the words, “shall the dead arise” or “will the people who have died, been killed, executed and put to death stand up, rise up, be established and confirmed” “and praise you” which means “and laud, give thanks to and confess you, Jehovah God”? “Selah” or “exalt, lift up and pause to meditate upon it”. The Psalmist asked Jehovah God whether people who have died will rise up and give Him praise and worship, and all who are reading and hearing his words should pause and think about this idea.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist questioned whether Jehovah God would fashion and produced extraordinary marvels to people who have died, and he asked whether people who have died would get up and worship Him. In other words, what use would it be to reveal marvelous acts to people who have died and have no ability to respond to God in worship? He wanted everyone reading and hearing his words to mediate upon this idea because God interceded for mankind by sending His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for us. Whoever believes and trusts in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and given assurance that God works His greatest extraordinary “wonders” on those who surrender to Him.

Next time the Psalmist asks, “Shall your lovingkindness be declared in the grave?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
