Glorious Things Spoken of Zion - Psalms 87:3

In Psalms eighty seven the Psalmist said, “The LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob” and in chapter eighty seven and verse three of Psalms the Psalmist said, “Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God” where we read,

Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God. Selah.

The verse begins, “Glorious things are spoken of you, ... The Psalmist began with the words, “Glorious things” or “heavy, weighty, rich and honorable words” “are spoken of you” which means “are uttered, declared and proclaimed concerning you, Zion or Jerusalem”. The Psalmist said rich and honorable words were proclaimed about the city of Jerusalem.

The verse continues,... O city of God. Selah. The Psalmist added the words, “O city” or “O dwelling place, habitation and abode” “of God” which means “belonging to the Divine judge, ruler and Supreme God”. The Psalmist declared that the “glorious things” were uttered concerning Jehovah God's city, Jerusalem, and anyone reading his words should pause and meditate upon it.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how David referred to the rich and honorable words which were declared over the city of Jerusalem. God loves Israel, and He loves the city of Jerusalem. He chose to have Israel be the example nation through whom the world would be blessed (See Genesis 18:18; 22:18; 26:4), and they were the nation through whom the Messiah Jesus came. Jesus is the “Savior and Lord” of the world, and He was sent into the world to die for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to join Him in honoring the “city of the Great King” who is Jesus Christ. (See Psalm 48:2)

Next time the Psalmist says, “I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
