Beating Down David's Foes - Psalms 89:23

In Psalms eighty nine Ethan the Psalmist shared how Jehovah God said of David, “the enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him”, and in chapter eighty nine and verse twenty-three of Psalms Ethan shared how Jehovah God said of David, “and I will beat down his foes before his face” where we read,

And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.

The verse begins, “And I will beat down his foes before his face,” Ethan began with the words, “and I will beat down” or “and I, Jehovah God, shall crush to fine pieces” “his foes” which means “his, David's, adversaries, enemies and oppressors” “before his face” or “in front and in the presence of his, David's, front and countenance”. Ethan shared how Jehovah God would crush the enemies of David right in front of him.

The verse continues, “and plague them that hate him.” Ethan added the words, “and plague them” or “and smite, beat, dash and stumble them, the enemies of David” “that hate him” which means “who are odious to and enemies of him, David”. Ethan said Jehovah God would beat and stumble the people who were odious to David.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how Ethan wrote of two other ways that Jehovah God said He would protect David. Crushing David's enemies and beating them because of their hatred toward him was God's vindication. Paul the apostle wrote, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord” (See Romans 12:19), and God will avenge people who yield their lives to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Let us give praise, honor and glory to Jehovah God and His Son Jesus for providing our salvation and protection from all our enemies throughout eternity.
