Master, Speak to My Brother - Luke 12:13

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God. But he that denies me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemes against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take you no thought how or what thing you shall answer, or what you shall say. For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you ought to say”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirteen of his book Luke shared how, “one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother” where we read:

And one of the company said unto him, Master,

speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

The verse reads, “And one of the company said unto him, Master, ... Luke began with the words, “and one of the company said” or “and a particular and certain man belonging to crowd, multitude, press or number of people the uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” which means “to Jesus”, “Master” or “teacher or instructor”. Luke shared how a particular man within the crowd called out to Jesus by calling Him “teacher”.

The verse goes on to say, “... speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.” Luke continued with the words, “speak to my brother” or “utter, declare and proclaim to the man's male sibling”, “that he divide the inheritance” which means “that the man's brother separate into parts and split into factions the property that is given by patrimony as an heir” “with me” or “with the certain man asking Jesus to speak to his brother”. Luke shared how the “certain man in the crowd” wanted Jesus to talk to his “brother” about “splitting” the “patrimony” or “possessions” left by their parents to them as “heirs”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn of a “particular” man who was in the “crowd of people” who wanted Jesus to talk to his brother about “splitting” the endowment left by their parents. No doubt this man felt himself slighted as he lodged his request to Jesus, and he wanted what he thought was his share of the “inheritance”. Jesus will answer the man in the next verse, but suffice it for now to realize this man had his mind and attention upon “temporary” things of this world. Jesus desires to give people the “everlasting inheritance” of forgiveness for their sins and life forever with God. Those who are wise will distinguish between the “temporary” and the “eternal” and choose that which lasts forever and ever.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “who made me a judge or a divider over you?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
