Your House is Left Desolate - Luke 13:35

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which kill the prophets, and stone them that are sent unto you; how often would I have gathered your children together, as a hen does gather her brood under her wings, and you would not!”, and in chapter thirteen and verse thirty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “Behold, your house is left unto you desolate”” where we read:

Behold, your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, You shall not see me, until the time come when ye shall say, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord.

The verse reads, “Behold, your house is left unto you desolate:” Luke began with the words, “Behold, your house” or “lo, look and consider Jerusalem's dwelling place, abode, residence and domicile” “is left unto you” which means “remitted, given up and no longer hindered toward Jerusalem as” “desolate” or “solitary, lonely, uninhabited and as a desert and wilderness”. Luke shared how Jesus declared the “dwelling place” of Jerusalem to be “given up” to be as an “uninhabited and desert place”.

The verse continues, “and verily I say unto you, You shall not see me, until the time come when you shall say, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord.” Luke added the words, “and verily I say unto you” or “and truly and surely I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to the city of Jerusalem”, “you shall not see me” which means “the city of Jerusalem will not observe, behold, notice, discover or discern Jesus”, “until the time come” or “till the moment arises and appears”, “when you shall say” which means “at the time and moment the people of Jerusalem will utter, declare and proclaim”, “Blessed is he” or “oh how happy, well-off, fortunate, celebrated and to be praised is the One” “that comes in the name of the Lord” which means “who arises and appears within the name which is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering that which belongs to the One whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master”. Luke shared how Jesus said with “certainty” that the city of Jerusalem would not “observe” Him until the time when they were making the declaration, “Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus basically “gave Jerusalem up” to their own “desolation” because they refused to receive Him as their Messiah. They killed “prophets” who told of the Messiah's coming even as they rejected Jesus. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and His invitation to receive His Son Jesus as their “Savior and Lord” is open to all. Those who refuse Jesus will be left to their own desolation and demise, and even as Jerusalem would not see Jesus until they eventually said, “Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord”, so shall it be for those who refuse Jesus, and at that time, it will be too late.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Luke share how Jesus, “went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
