How Do You Not Discern the Time? - Luke 12:56

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “When you see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway you say, There comes a shower; and so it is. And when you see the south wind blow, you say, There will be heat; and it comes to pass”, and in chapter twelve and verse fifty-six of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked, “how is it that you do not discern this time?” would be divided where we read:

You hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky and of the earth;

but how is it that you do not discern this time?

The verse reads,You hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky and of the earth;” Luke began with the words “you hypocrites” or “you people are actors, stage players, dissemblers and pretenders” “you can discern the face” which means “you, people are able and capable of testing, examining, proving and scrutinizing the front appearance of the outward circumstances” “of the sky” or “belonging to the vaulted expanse of the sky” “and of the earth” which means “and pertaining to the arable land, territory, country and region”. Luke shared how Jesus called the people listening to Him “stage actors” because they were able to “recognize” the appearance of the “sky” and the “terrestrial” grounds.

The verse continues, “but how is it that you do not discern this time?” Luke added the words, “but how is it that you do not” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover in what way do the people not have the ability to” “discern this time” which means “to test, examine, prove and scrutinize the current opportunity and season”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned why the people listening to Him were unable to “scrutinize” the current season or time period.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus was direct toward the people who were listening to Him. Jesus called the people “stage actors” because they had the “ability” to “scrutinize” the weather around them, but they were unable to “scrutinize” the times and that their Messiah was among them. God loves people, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with every one of them through His Son Jesus. When they submit their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, they shall not only be looking at their current weather conditions, but also recognize the current time and that the Lord Jesus is among them.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “why even of yourselves judge you not what is right?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
