Five in One House Divided - Luke 12:52

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled? But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! Suppose you that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, No; but rather division”, and in chapter twelve and verse fifty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “there shall be five in one house divided” where we read:

For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.

The verse reads, “For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, ... Luke began with the words, “for from henceforth” or “because, since and on account that from this present time forward” “there shall be five” which means “there will exist five people” “in one house divided” or “within a single, certain or particular household, dwelling place, abode or habitation cleaved asunder, cut in pieces, at variance and in dissension”. Luke shared how Jesus said from the “present time” He was in forward there would be “five people” within a single household which would be in “disunity”.

The verse continues, “... three against two, and two against three.” Luke added the words, “three against two” or “three people in opposition to two other people”, “and two against three” which means “and two people who will be in opposition to three other people”. Luke shared how Jesus said “two people” in a five person household would be “in opposition” to the remaining “three”, and “three people” will be in opposition to the other “two”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus being the Messiah and Christ will cause a “division and disunity” within the people in a single home. Some will believe in Him, and others will not. God the Father desires to have all people believe and trust in His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, however, many will not. This causes “division” in families, friends, associates and nations. Those who are wise will carefully consider the cost for submitting their lives to Jesus, and as close as family members may be, there may be a price to pay for believing and trusting in Him.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “a father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
