Take No Thought for Your Life - Luke 12:22

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus, “spoke a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully. And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have much goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, You fool, this night your soul shall be required of you: then whose shall those things be, which you have provided? So is he that lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “take no thought for your life” where we read:

And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you,

Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat; neither for the body, what you shall put on.

The verse reads, “And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, ... Luke began with the words, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto his disciples” which means “to Jesus' own students, pupil and attendants”, “therefore” or “then, wherefore, consequently and these things being so” “I say unto you” which means “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to His disciples”. Luke shared how Jesus began to speak with His disciples by “saying” the following words.

The verse continues, “... Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.” Luke added the words, “take no thought” or “do not be anxious, worried or troubled with cares” “for your life” which means “and Jesus' disciples' own living and seat of the feelings, desires, affections and aversions”, “what you shall eat” or “what food or meal Jesus' disciples were to devour and consume”; “neither for the body” which means “nor and not in any way on behalf of the physical corpse”, “what you shall put on” or “as to what clothing with which Jesus' disciple should be arrayed or clothed”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples they were not to “worry” about “food to eat” or “clothing to wear”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus directed His disciples to live “worry free” concerning their nourishment and clothing. God created people, He loves them, and He knows how to care for them. Those who are wise will submit their lives to Jesus who not only brings “everlasting life”, but also promised to sustain them in this life as well.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “the life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
