Coming in an Unexpected Day - Luke 12:46

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing. Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he has. But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delays his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-six of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “the lord of that servant will come in a day when he looks not for him” where we read:

The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looks not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

The verse reads, “The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looks not for him, ... Luke began with the words, “the lord of that servant” or “the one to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah belonging to that man of servile condition, slave and bondman” “will come in a day” which means “will arise and appear within a time from sunset to sunset” “when he looks not for him” or “at the time and moment the servant does not expect or watch for the lord”. Luke shared how the “servant” of the “lord” will be surprised by the unexpected return of his master.

The verse goes on to say, “... and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.” Luke continued the words, “and at an hour” or “and at a particular time and moment” “when he is not aware” which means “when the servant has not perceived, understood and had knowledge of”, “and will cut him in sunder” or “and shall flog and scourge severely”, “and will appoint him his portion” which means “and will place, set, fix and establish the servant's lot, measure and destiny” “with the unbelievers” or “alongside and together with the unfaithful, faithless and perfidious”. Luke shared how the “lord” of the “servant” will return in a moment the “servant” is not expecting Him, and the “Lord” will “fix and establish” the “servant” alongside people who do not “believe” in Him.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we understand this to be a dire warning from Jesus for anyone who is not expecting His imminent return. People who live in a manner that neglects looking for Jesus' return will be suddenly surprised when He comes. Those who are not followers and believers in Jesus will be separated from God forever, and woe be to the “unaware servant” who is placed in their same destination.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells what happens to, “that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared him not himself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
