Jerusalem, Jerusalem - Luke 13:34

The beloved physician Luke wrote how, “there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, Get you out, and depart from here: for Herod will kill you. And he said unto them, Go you, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem”, and in chapter thirteen and verse thirty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem … how often would I have gathered your children together” where we read:

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which kill the prophets, and stone them that are sent unto you; how often would I have gathered your children together, as a hen does gather her brood under her wings, and you would not!

The verse reads, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which kill the prophets, and stone them that are sent unto you; how often would I have gathered your children together, ...” Luke began with the words, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem” or “O Jerusalem which is repeated for effect and means set you double peace and was the capital of Palestine”, “which kill the prophets” which means “who abolish, destroy, allow to perish, extinguish and inflict mortal death upon the men who were moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman, solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation”, “and stone them that are sent unto you” or “and killed the prophets who were dispatched, assigned and ordered to Jerusalem by pelting and throwing stones at them”; “how often would I have gathered your children together” which means “how many times would Jesus have assembled and collected together the offspring and progeny of Jerusalem”. Luke shared how Jesus cried out to the “city of Jerusalem” because they “killed” the “prophets” sent to them either by “stoning” them or some other way even while Jesus would have “assembled” their children unto Him.

The verse goes on to say, “... as a hen does gather her brood under her wings, and you would not!” Luke continued with the words, “as a hen” or “like and similar to a female bird or domestic fowl” “does gather her brood” which means “assembles and collects the hen's nest of birds or chicks” “under her wings” or “beneath the hen's physical wings”, “and you would not” which means “and the city of Jerusalem refused”. Luke shared how Jesus used the illustration of a “hen” gathering her “chicks” beneath her “physical wings” to describe how He desired to “gather” Jerusalem to Himself.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn about Jesus' passion and desire toward the city of “Jerusalem”. Jesus wanted to have a personal relationship with the people in the city even though they previously “killed” prophets who were sent to them. God wants people to live with Him eternally, and when they submit themselves to His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they will be forgiven of their sins, gathered unto God as His children and promised “everlasting life” with Him. Let all who read these words hear Jesus' passionate cry for Jerusalem to be “gathered” as well as His passionate cry for them to be “gathered” to Him as well.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “Behold, your house is left unto you desolate”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
