Who is that Faithful and Wise Steward? - Luke 12:42

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. Be you therefore ready also: for the Son of man comes at an hour when you think not”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus asks, “who then is that faithful and wise steward?” where we read:

And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?

The verse reads, “And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, ... Luke began with the words, “and the Lord said” or “and the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “who then” which means “what person therefore, wherefore and these things being so” “is that faithful” or “exists as the believing, confiding, trusting and convinced” “and wise steward” which means “and intelligent, prudent, sagacious, thoughtful, discreet and skilled manager or superintendent of the household”. Luke shared how Jesus responded to Peter by referring to the “householder” who is both “believing” and “intelligent”.

The verse goes on to say, “... whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?” Luke continued with the words, “whom his lord” or “that person's One to whom a thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding for the faithful and wise steward ” “shall make ruler” which means “will set up, appoint, constitute and put in place as in charge” “over his household” or “above all the man's servants, attendants and domestics”, “to give them their portion of meat” which means “to grant, bestow, supply and furnish their measured ration or allowance of food” “in due season” or “within the right measure and limited period of time”? Luke shared how Jesus continued His response to Peter by asking who the “master” of a house would choose as “overseer” of His home and would grant “food” or provision to those who helped to care for His abode.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referred to the person that would be chosen to take charge over His “household” and those within it. God desires to care for everyone through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will use them to care for His people and “dwelling places”. Those who are wise will seek to be Jesus' “faithful and wise stewards” and allow Jesus to choose who will to care for His house and those within it.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
