A Baptism for Jesus to be Baptized - Luke 12:50

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?”, and in chapter twelve and verse fifty of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “I have a baptism to be baptized with” where we read:

But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!

The verse reads, “But I have a baptism to be baptized with; Luke began with the words, “but I have a baptism” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover I, Jesus, hold, own and possess an immersion and submersion” “to be baptized with” which means “with which to be immersed and submerged”. Luke shared how Jesus knew He was to face a “baptism” which would be the basis for the salvation of mankind.

The verse continues, “and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!” Luke added the words, “and how am I straitened” or “and in what way was Jesus taken with, held, constrained and thronged” “till it be accomplished” which means “until the time and moment Jesus baptism would be brought to a close, finished, ended and performed”! Luke shared how Jesus felt Himself to be “constrained” until He fulfilled the “baptism” He was to endure.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew in advance the difficult task that lie ahead of Him. In order for people to be saved from their sins, Jesus would be subjected to wrongful arrest, persecution, torture, punishment and eventual crucifixion. Jesus was resolved and purposed to endure that “baptism” because without it, no one would be saved to live with God the Father forever. Those who are wise will carefully consider the “baptism” Jesus endured on their behalf and submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “suppose you that I am come to give peace on earth?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
