Jesus Sending Fire on the Earth - Luke 12:49

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he comes shall find so doing. Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he has. But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delays his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken. The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looks not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “I am come to send fire on the earth” where we read:

I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?

The verse reads, “I am come to send fire on the earth; Luke began with the words, “I am come” or “I, Jesus, arise and appear” “to send fire” which means “to dispatch and release fiery fire” “on the earth” or “upon the arable land, country, territory and region”. Luke shared how Jesus declared that He “came to the earth” to send “fiery fire” upon it.

The verse goes on to say, “and what will I, if it be already kindled?” Luke continued with the words, “and what will I” or “and what has Jesus resolved, desired, determined and purposed”, “if it be already kindled” which means “whether the fiery fire is even now lit or lighted”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned as to what would happen if the “fiery fire” is even now “lit” upon the earth.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus came to bring a “cleansing and purifying” effect upon the earth. “Fire” not only consumes and destroys, it also “purifies”, and because the world was filled with “sin”, a resolution to those errors from God's way needed to be ameliorated. Jesus came to the world to “save” people from their “sins” which separated them from God, and when they believe and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord”, He not only will forgive and cleanse them from their sins but also provide them with “everlasting life” with God.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “I have a baptism to be baptized with”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
