Jesus Teaching on the Sabbath Day - Luke 13:10

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “spoke also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbers it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it. And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that you shall cut it down”, and in chapter thirteen and verse ten of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath” where we read:

And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.

The verse reads, “And he was teaching ...” Luke began with the words, “and he” or “and Jesus” “was teaching” which means “ was imparting instruction, instilling doctrine and giving didactic discourses”. Luke shared how Jesus was “imparting instruction” again.

The verse goes on to say, “... in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.” Luke continued with the words, “in one of the synagogues” or “within a particular sacred worship assembly of Jews formally gathered together to offer prayers and listen to the reading and expositions of the scriptures” “on the sabbath” which means “upon seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work”. Luke shared how Jesus was “teaching” on the “Sabbath day” in the “sacred worship place” where people assembled to listen to the “reading and expositions” of the “scriptures”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see another time when Jesus was imparting “instruction” on the “Sabbath day” to the people who assembled in the “synagogues”. Jesus loved to share the principles of the Kingdom of God with people, and because He came to share God's “gospel” or “good news” with people, Jesus busied Himself with informing them of God's plan. Those who are wise will examine the “scriptures” and find God's redemption plan through His Son available to all who believe and trust in Him.

Next time Luke shares how, “there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
