Except You Repent - Luke 13:3

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose you that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?”, and in chapter thirteen and verse three of his book Luke shared how Jesus says, “except you repent, you shall all likewise perish” where we read:

I tell you, No: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.

The verse reads, “I tell you, No:” Luke began with the words, “I tell you” or “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to the people listening to Him”, “No” which means “not in any way or manner”. Luke shared how Jesus told the people there was “no” difference between them and the “Galilaeans” whose “blood” Pilate mixed in their “sacrifices”.

The verse continues, “but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.” Luke added the words, “but, except you repent” or “nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and, unless the people informing Jesus change their minds for the better and amend with abhorrence their past sins”, “you shall all likewise perish” which means “each, every, the whole and everyone of the people will in the same manner and likeness be destroyed, rendered useless, put to an end and ruined”. Luke shared how every person was in need of “changing their minds and altering their ways” or else they will be “destroyed, rendered useless and ruined”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus declared the need for all people to have a “Savior”. Even though some people endure more hardships than other, everyone needs Jesus to “save” them from their “sins”. Without Jesus, there is no other way to have a personal relationship with God, and those who are wise will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time we see Luke share how Jesus refers to, “those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
