A Woman with an Eighteen Year Infirmity - Luke 13:11

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath”, and in chapter thirteen and verse eleven of his book Luke shared how, “there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years” where we read:

And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years,

and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

The verse reads, “And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, ...” Luke began with the words, “and, behold” or “and lo, look and consider” “there was a woman” which means “there existed a female human being” “which had a spirit of infirmity” or “who was possessed with a simple essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting with weakness, lack of strength, feebleness of health and sickness” “eighteen years” which means “for eighteen years of time”. Luke shared about “a woman” who was possessed with “a spirit of weakness and feebleness” for “eighteen years”.

The verse continues, “... and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.” Luke added the words, “and was bowed together” or “and was completely overcome and bent completely forward”, “and could in no wise life up herself” which means “and was completely unable and incapable of raising herself up”. Luke shared how the woman with the “spirit of infirmity” was so “bent over” that she was incapable of “lifting herself” up.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we can only imagine how difficult it must have been for this woman to manage in life. Everywhere she went she had to walk around in a “bent over” condition. This was caused by a “spirit of infirmity”, and Jesus will help her in our next verse. For now let it suffice us to know that God is aware of every condition, regardless of how terrible the situations people face, Jesus is able to “save” them from their “sins” and will be with them throughout every trial and tribulation that comes their way.

Next time Luke shares, “when Jesus saw her, he called her to him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
