Are You Speaking This Parable to Us? - Luke 12:41

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. Be you therefore ready also: for the Son of man comes at an hour when you think not”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus' disciples asked Him, “Lord, are you speaking this parable unto us?” where we read:

Then Peter said unto him, Lord, speak you this parable unto us, or even to all?

The verse reads, “Then Peter said unto him, ... Luke began with the words, “then Peter” or “at that time Jesus' disciple Peter whose name means a little rock or stone” “said unto him” which means “uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Jesus” the following question. Luke shared how Peter responded to Jesus' statements by asking Him the following question.

The verse continues, “... Lord, speak you this parable unto us, or even to all?” Luke added the word, “Lord” or “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”, “speak you this parable unto us” which means “are you, Jesus exhorting, advising, commanding and directing the earthly story with a heavenly meaning to Jesus' disciples themselves”, “or even to all” or “or indeed and also to each, every, the whole and everyone”? Luke shared how Peter desired to know whether Jesus was sharing His earthly story with a heavenly meaning to His disciples only or to every person.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Peter wanted to know to whom Jesus was directing His “parable”. Some of the teachings Jesus gave were to the masses, and others were intended for His disciples. God desires every person to be a “disciple” of His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, each of His teaching will have meaning for them. Jesus will answer Peter's question in the next verse, but suffice it now for us to know that we should carefully consider every word that Jesus shares with His disciples and the crowds.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “who then is that faithful and wise steward”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
