Speaking a Word against Jesus and the Holy Spirit - Luke 12:10

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God. But he that denies me before men shall be denied before the angels of God”, and in chapter twelve and verse ten of his book Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples the difference between, “whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man” and “against the Holy Ghost” where we read:

And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemes against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

The verse reads, “And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, ... Luke began with the words, “and whosoever shall speak a word” or “and whatever person whether male or female will utter, declare and proclaim a speech by a living voice, a mandate or decree” “against the Son of man” which means “in opposition to God's Son Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the person who “speaks” in opposition to Him.

The verse goes on to say, “... it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemes against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.” Luke continued with the words, “it shall be forgiven him” or “the speech made in opposition to Jesus will be left destitute, disregarded, remitted and abandoned from the person”: “but unto him that blasphemes” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding the person whether male or female who speaks reproachfully, rails, reviles, calumniates and blasphemes” “against the Holy Ghost” or “in opposition to the pure, morally blameless and religiously and ceremonially consecrated third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, coeternal with the Father and the Son” “it shall not be forgiven him” which means “speaking against the Holy Ghost will not be left destitute, disregarded, remitted and abandoned from the person”. Luke shared how Jesus said “forgiveness” would be extended to a person who speaks in opposition to Him, however, no one will be “forgiven” who speaks in opposition to God's “Holy Spirit”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn what is knows as “the unpardonable sin”. Those hearing Jesus' words must have wondered what the difference was from speaking in opposition to Him, and speaking “against” the “Holy Spirit”. Jesus later said, when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.” (See John 16:13-14) The “Holy Spirit's” mission is to lead people to Jesus Christ, and only through Jesus may a person be saved from their sins and receive “everlasting life” with God. When a person “speaks against” the “Holy Spirit” of God, they reject God's sole offer of “salvation” through Jesus, and those who refuse to receive Jesus will have “spoken against” the “Holy Spirit”. These people will have no other means of forgiveness. Let all who read these words of Jesus take heed to the message of the Holy Spirit and receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take no though how or what thing you shall answer”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
