Blessed are Servants Who Watch - Luke 12:37

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning. And you yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he comes and knocks, they may open unto him immediately”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-seven of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he comes shall find watching” where we read:

Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he comes shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

The verse reads, “Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he comes shall find watching: Luke began with the words, “Blessed are those servants” or “oh how happy, fortunate and well off are the ministers, slaves and men of servile condition”, “whom the lord” which means “that the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title for God the Messiah” “when he comes” or “at the time and moment the Lord arises and appears” “shall find watching” which means “will discover, practice and discover himself being attentive, vigilant and awake”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the “people of servile condition” who are ministers and are “attentive and vigilant” as they look for the “Lord's” return.

The verse continues, “that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.” Luke added the words, “that he shall gird himself” or “so the Lord will fasten garments with a girdle or belt”, “and make them to sit down to meat” which means “and have the servants to be seated or recline to eat”, “and will come forth” or “and shall arise and appear” “and serve them” which means “and minister to the people who served Him”. Luke shared how Jesus said the Lord, which is Jesus, will “fasten a garment around Himself” and have His ministers to be seated to a meal as He “serves” them.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn of one of the most remarkable acts of the Lord Jesus we find in the Bible. Jesus said people who have yielded their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and serve Him afterward are “blessed” because they remain in a state of “watching” for His return. Those “servants” will be acknowledged by Jesus as He seats them at a meal where He will “gird Himself with a garment” and “serve” those who “served” Him. God so loves people that not only will He save those who believe and trust in His Son Jesus, but He will have Jesus “serve” them with a meal when they gather to Him one day. Those who are wise will align themselves with God's plan of “salvation” and discover He is willing to provide and bless them with everything they need both on earth and in Heaven.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus tells His disciples to watch, “if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
