A Man with Dropsy - Luke 14:2

The beloved physician Luke wrote, “And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him”, and in chapter fourteen and verse two of his book Luke shared how, “there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy” where we read:

And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.

The verse reads, “And, behold, there was a certain man before him ...” Luke began with the words, “And, behold” or “and lo, look and consider”, “there was a certain man” which means “there was a particular male human being” “before him” or “in front and in the presences of Jesus”. Luke shared how there was a particular “man” who also attended the meal at the “Pharisee's” house.

The verse continues, “... which had the dropsy.” Luke added the words, “which had” or “who possessed and suffered from” “the dropsy” which means “the dropsical or edema which was a condition characterized by an excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or tissues of the body”. Luke shared how the man within the Pharisee's home was inflicted with “edema”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn about another “man” who was afflicted with a terrible physical condition. “Dropsy” or “edema” causes extreme swelling in the body tissues, and the suffering from it is horrific. We shall discover what Jesus does with this man in the next few verses, but let it suffice for now to know there are “physical conditions” in the world that cause “suffering”, and God is well aware of them all. God desires to help people both “physically” and “spiritually”, and the only difference is one is temporary and the other eternal in nature. Those who are wise will avail themselves to Jesus by believing and trusting in Him and find Him to be the “Savior and Lord” they need to have an abundant life.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
