Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus revealed Himself to the two disciples who traveled with Him to Emmaus, and afterward they “rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. And as they thus spoke, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are you troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have you here any meat And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them. And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse forty-nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “behold, I sent the promise of my Father upon you” where we read:
And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you:
but tarry you in the city of Jerusalem, until you be endued with power from on high.
The verse reads, “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: ...” Luke began with the words, “and, behold” or “and lo, look and consider”, “I send the promise” which means “I, Jesus, drive out and set at liberty the assent, pledge and announcement” “of my Father” or “which belongs to Jesus' Heavenly Father God” “upon you” which means “on you, disciples of Jesus and the people with them”. Luke shared how Jesus told His “eleven disciples and the people with them” that He was going to “set at liberty” the “pledge” of God His Father on them.
The verse goes on to say, “... but tarry you in the city of Jerusalem, until you be endued with power from on high.” Luke added the words, “but tarry you” which means “however, notwithstanding, nevertheless and moreover Jesus' disciples and the people with them were to settle, hover and dwell” “in the city of Jerusalem” or “within the habitation and abode of Jerusalem which means set you double peace”, “until you be endued with power” which means “till the time you, disciples of Jesus and their companion are clothed, arrayed and equipped with strength and ability” “from on high” or “out of the height, measurement and rank of heaven”. Luke shared how Jesus told His disciples and their companions to “settle and dwell” within “Jerusalem” until the time they were “equipped with strength and ability” from “Heaven”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn two more discourses from Jesus. First, He was going to “set at liberty” upon them the “promise” which was to come from God His Father, and they were to “stay or dwell” in “the city of Jerusalem” until the time that “power” was released upon them. Jesus knew His disciples were unable to spread the “gospel of the Kingdom of God” throughout the world unless they had the “strength and ability” of God to do so. God wants every person in the world to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they believe and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord”, they will be forgiven of their sins, receive everlasting life and be used to spread His “good news” every day of their life.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
