Did Not Your Fathers Thus? - Nehemiah 13:18

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the sabbath day?”, and in chapter thirteen and verse eighteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah asked, “did not your fathers thus?” where we read,

Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city?

yet you bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

The verse reads, Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city?”Nehemiah began with the words, “did not your fathers thus” which means “was not this the way your male progenitors and ancestors perform and act in the same manner”, “and did not our God” or “and was it not true that our, Nehemiah and the people of Judah's, Supreme Deity” “bring all this evil upon us” which means “carry forth each, every, the whole and everything pertaining to the bad, disagreeableness, malignancy and wickedness to us, Nehemiah and the people of Judah”, “and upon this city” or “and on the dwelling place and settle abode of Jerusalem”? Nehemiah asked whether the people remembered how the “wickedness” they were doing was similar to their male progenitors which caused Jehovah God to “bring” disagreeableness and wickedness on them and the “city” of Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say, yet you bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.” Nehemiah added the words, “yet you bring more wrath upon Israel or “still you, the people of Judah, carry and convey an increased amount of anger and vexation on Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name for the descendants and nation of descendants of Jacob” “by profaning the sabbath” which means “through the means of defiling, polluting and desecrating the day of intermission and rest”. Nehemiah told the people of “Judah” that they would convey even more anger and vexation on “Israel” through the means of defiling the day of intermission and rest.

When we think through Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover how he questioned the people of “Judah”concerning them bringing an increased amount of wickedness upon “Israel” by desecrating the “Sabbath day”. He wanted them to call to mind how their forefathers acted in the same wicked manner which caused Jehovah God to bring judgment upon them, and if they continued in this behavior, they would cause even greater anger to come upon them. God wants us to learn when we have violated His law, and when we suffer consequences because of our insolence, we should never return to our evil ways. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us by His Holy Spirit to stay away from acts and deeds that are defiling and polluting.

Next time Nehemiah shares what happened, “when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
