In the book of Daniel, Daniel said, “now God had brought Daniel into favor and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs”, and in chapter one and verse ten of Daniel, Daniel said, “the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king” where we read,
And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall you make me endanger my head to the king.
The verse reads, “And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your meat and your drink:” Daniel began with the words, “and the prince of the eunuchs” which means “and the ruler, leader, chief, chieftain and official belonging to the castrated valets or chamberlains” “said unto Daniel” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed to Daniel whose name means God is my judge”, “I fear my lord the king” which means “I, the prince of the eunuchs, am reverent and afraid of the royal ruler and leader”, “who has appointed your meat” or “that reckoned, assigned and appointed to your, Daniel's, dainties and food” “and your drink” which means “and your, Daniel's, liquid refreshment”. Daniel shared how the leader and ruler of the castrated chamberlains told him that he revered and was afraid of King Nebuchadnezzar because he assigned the food and liquid refreshment to the chosen children of Judah.
The verse goes on to say, “for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort?” Daniel continued with the words, “for why should he see” whose name means “because, since and on account for what reason and caused was King Nebuchadnezzar to observe and perceive” “your faces” or “your, the chosen children of Judah's, countenances” “worse than the children” which means “fretful, sad, vexed, enraged, perplexed and troubled compared to the offspring and progeny” “which are of your sort” or “who are similar to you, Daniel and the other Hebrew children, that are rejoicing and filled with joy”. Daniel said the “prince of the eunuchs” asked him why King Nebuchadnezzar ought to observe his and the other chosen children of Judah's countenances to be more sad, vexed and troubled than the others like them who were chosen.
Finally the verse says, “then shall you make me endanger my head to the king.” Daniel concluded this verse with the words, “then shall you make me endanger” which means “at that time will you, Daniel, cause me, the prince of the eunuchs be made under obligation and guilty” “my head to the king” or “my, the prince of the eunuch's physical head, toward the royal ruler and leader”. Daniel ended this verse by referring to how “prince of the eunuch's” “physical head” would be guilty before King Nebuchadnezzar.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel how “Ashpenaz” who was the “prince of the eunuchs” said that he was afraid of how King Nebuchadnezzar would respond to him when he discovered that Daniel and the other Hebrew children would not consume his food and “drink”. He thought the countenances of “Daniel and the other chosen children of Judah” would look worse off than the other children who would be consuming the King's provisions. Daniel will respond to him in our next verse, but for now let us consider the determination of Daniel not to “defile himself with the king's meat and wine”. Regardless of how the king would react, Daniel and the other Hebrew children were going to trust in God with their future. God wants us to be this way as well, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead three days later, all who put their faith and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and given His Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth and empower them to live according to that truth regardless of the consequences that may come.
Next time Daniel says, “then said Daniel to Melzar”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
