In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “in the days of Joiakim were priests, the chief of the fathers: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah, of Ezra, Meshullam; of Amariah, Jehohanan, of Melicu, Jonathan; of Shebaniah, Joseph, of Harim, Adna; of Meraioth, Helkai, of Iddo, Zechariah; Of Ginnethon, Meshullam, of Abijah, Zichri; of Miniamin, of Moadiah, Piltai; Of Bilgah, Shammua; of Shemaiah, Jehonathan; And of Joiarib, Mattenai; of Jedaiah, Uzzi; Of Sallai, Kallai; of Amok, Eber”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-one of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “of Hilkiah, Hashabiah” where we read,
Of Hilkiah, Hashabiah; of Jedaiah, Nethaneel.
The verse reads, “Of Hilkiah, Hashabiah;” Nehemiah began with the words, “of Hilkiah” which means “belonging to Hilkiah whose name means my portion is Jehovah”, “Hashabiah” or “Jehovah has considered”. Nehemiah shared how“Hashabiah” or “Jehovah has considered” who descended from “Hilkiah” or “my portion is Jehovah” were among the priests who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel.
The verse goes on to say, “of Jedaiah, Nethaneel.” Nehemiah continues with the words, “of Jedaiah” or “belonging to Jedaiah whose name means Jehovah has known”, “Nethaneel” whose name means “given of God”. Nehemiah included “Nethaneel” who descended from “Jedaiah” in his list of names of the priests who went back to Jerusalem.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about another two men who were among the priests who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel. “Hashabiah and Nethaneel” who descended from “Jilkiah and Jedaiah” followed the commission of Jehovah God to go back to their homeland, and they became instrumental in leading people in worship of Him. God wants us to be involved in His Kingdom work as well, and He sent His Only Begotten Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days so everyone who puts their faith and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and given the opportunity to serve Him wherever His Holy Spirit leads and guides.
Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
