In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “I brought up the princes of Judah upon the wall, and appointed two great companies of them that gave thanks, whereof one went on the right hand upon the wall toward the dung gate, and after them went Hoshaiah, and half of the princes of Judah, and Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam, Judah, and Benjamin, and Shemaiah, and Jeremiah, ...”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-five of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “a certain of the priests' sons with trumpets” where we read,
And certain of the priests' sons with trumpets; namely, Zechariah the son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Michaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph:
The verse reads, “And certain of the priests' sons with trumpets;” Nehemiah began with the words, “and certain of the priests' sons” which means “and particular ones of the male offspring and progeny of the spiritual leaders and spokesmen” “with trumpets” or “accompanied by clarions or trumpet instruments”. Nehemiah referred to the male offspring of particular ones of the spiritual leaders who had clarions or trumpet instruments with them.
The verse goes on to say, “namely, Zechariah the son of Jonathan, the son of Shemaiah, the son of Mattaniah, the son of Michaiah, the son of Zaccur, the son of Asaph:” Nehemiah continued with the words, “namely, Zechariah” or “including Zechariah whose name means Jehovah remembers” “the son of Jonathan” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Jonathan whose name means Jehovah has given”, “the son of Shemaiah” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Shemaiah whose name means heard by Jehovah”, “the son of Mattaniah” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Mattaniah whose name means gift of Jehovah”, “the son of Michaiah” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Michaiah whose name means who is like God”, “the son of Zaccur” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Zaccur whose name means mindful”, “the son of Asaph” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Asaph whose name means gatherer”. Nehemiah shared how “Zechariah “ who was “Jonathan's”son, and “the sons of Shemaiah, Mattaniah, Michaiah, Zaccur and Asaph” played the trumpets or clarions.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah that there were clarion or trumpet players among the male offspring of the priests who joined in the dedicating of the barrier wall. Singers, instruments, spiritual spokesmen and pomp and circumstance were all appropriate for this festive event. God reestablished His people Israel back into their homeland of Judah and Jerusalem, and now that the barrier wall was completed, dedicating it was the proper procedure. God loves to bless people, and His greatest blessing was when He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead three days later. Now everyone who puts their faith and trust in Him as their “Lord and Savior” will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and given talents and abilities by His Holy Spirit to celebrate Him in His Kingdom both now and for all eternity.
Next time Nehemiah shares about Asaph's, “brethren”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
