Of Iddo, Zechariah - Nehemiah 12:16

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, in the days of Joiakim were priests, the chief of the fathers: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah, of Ezra, Meshullam; of Amariah, Jehohanan, of Melicu, Jonathan; of Shebaniah, Joseph, Of Harim, Adna; of Meraioth, Helkai”, and in chapter twelve and verse sixteen of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “of Iddo, Zechariah” where we read,

Of Iddo, Zechariah; of Ginnethon, Meshullam;

The verse reads, Of Iddo, Zechariah; Nehemiah began with the words, “Of Iddo” whose name means “belonging to Iddo whose name means His witness”, “Zechariah” or “Jehovah remembers”. Nehemiah shared how “Zechariah” who descended from “Iddo” was among the priests who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel.

The verse continues, “of Ginnethon, Meshullam;” Nehemiah added the words, “of Ginnethon” or “belonging to Ginnethon whose name means gardener”, “Meshullam” whose name means “friend”. Nehemiah shared how “Meshullam” or “friend” who was the son of “Ginnethon” or “gardener” was also among the priests who returned to Jerusalem.

When we think through Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover another two priests who went back to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel. “Zechariah and Meshullam” heard and obeyed the call of God to return to their homeland. God's will was being fulfilled, and as these “priests” followed God's directive, they and the people of Israel were blessed. God wants the same for us, and when we surrender to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the grave three days later, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and lead us by His Holy Spirit into positions in His Kingdom that bless Him and others.

Next time Nehemiah says, “of Abijah, Zichri”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
