Israel in the Days of Zerubbabel and Nehemiah - Nehemiah 12:47

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chief of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving unto God”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-seven of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel … and Nehemiah” where we read,

And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, every day his portion: and they sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites sanctified them unto the children of Aaron.

The verse reads, And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel, and in the days of Nehemiah, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, every day his portion: Nehemiah began with the words, “and all Israel” which means “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the people within Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and nation of the descendants of Jacob” “in the days of Zerubbabel” or “within the time period and season pertaining to Zerubbabel whose name means sown in Babylon and was the grandson of king Jehoiachin and leader of the first group of returning exiles from Babylon”, “and in the days of Nehemiah” which means “and within the time period and season pertaining to Nehemiah whose name means Jehovah comforts the son of Hachaliah, cupbearer to king Artaxerxes, who became governor of Judah after the return from exile” “gave the portions” or “granted, bestowed and ascribed parts and allotments” “of the singers” which means “pertaining to the men who made musical odes with their voices” “and the porters” or “and the gatekeepers, janitors and doorkeepers”, “every day his portion” which means “each, all and the whole sunrise to sunset his, the singer's, part or allotment”. Nehemiah shared how the people of Israel provided daily allotments to the “singers and porters” during the time “Zerubbabel and Nehemiah” ruled over them.

The verse goes on to say, and they sanctified holy things unto the Levites; and the Levites sanctified them unto the children of Aaron.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “and they sanctified holy things” or “and they, Zerubbabel and Nehemiah, consecrated, dedicated and set apart sacred items” “unto the Levites” which means “to the descendants of Levi whose name means joined to and were specially set aside by God for His service”; “and the Levites” or “and the descendants of Levi whose name means joined to and were specially set aside by God for His service” “sanctified them”which means “consecrated, dedicated and set apart them, the sacred items” “unto the children of Aaron” or “to the offspring and progeny belonging to Aaron whose name means light bringer and was the brother of Moses and a Levite who was the first high priest”. Nehemiah shared how he and “Zerubbabel” consecrated the sacred items and distributed them to the “Levites”, and the “Levites” consecrated them and distributed them to the offspring of “Aaron” who were the priests.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah the order that took place when the people of Israel gave to the ministry in the temple. The “singers and porters” received their daily allotments, and the sacred items were given to “Zerubbabel and Nehemiah” who dedicated and distributed them to the Levites who consecrated and distributed them to the descendants of Aaron who were the priests. God has His order in the ministry and in worship of Him, and when we yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to participate in giving to His Kingdom work while the leaders are responsible to consecrate and dedicate them in the service of Jehovah God.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see Nehemiah share how, “they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
