Bakbukiah and Unni - Nehemiah 12:9

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared more about, “the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, which was over the thanksgiving, he and his brethren”, and in chapter twelve and verse nine of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “Bakbukiah and Unni” where we read,

Also Bakbukiah and Unni, their brethren, were over against them in the watches.

The verse reads, “Also Bakbukiah and Unni, their brethren, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “also Bakbukiah”which means “even so and indeed Bakbukiah whose name means wasting of Jehovah” “and Unni” or “afflicted”, “their brethren” which means “their, Bakbukiah and Unni's, fellow associates and kinsmen”. Nehemiah shared how “Bakbukiah and Unni” and their associates were responsible for the following. 

The verse goes on to say, “... were over against them in the watches.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “were over against them” or “existed as overseers and in charge with what was in front of, straightforward and in sight of them, Bakbukiah, Unni and their brethren” “in the watches” which means “within the service, guarding, keeping and preserving times”. Nehemiah shared how “Bakbukiah and Unni” and their “fellow associates” were in charge of that which was in front of the guarding and service times. 

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we discover through Nehemiah that “Bakbukiah and Unni” and their associates had a role within the Kingdom of God. They were to stand opposite to the “Levites” who were in charge of the “thanksgiving”. One by one each of these people and groups were assigned their responsibilities in the worship of God. God wants all of us to be involved in His Kingdom, and when we yield to His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sin of all mankind and was resurrected from the grave three days later, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and established within His Kingdom by His Holy Spirit and in keeping with His Divine will purpose for our lives.
