The Sons of the Singers - Nehemiah 12:28

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites out of all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep the dedication with gladness, both with thanksgivings, and with singing, with cymbals, psalteries, and with harps”, and in chapter twelve and verse twenty-eight of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the sons of the singers” and more where we read,

And the sons of the singers gathered themselves together, both out of the plain country round about Jerusalem, and from the villages of Netophathi;

The verse reads, And the sons of the singers gathered themselves together, ... Nehemiah began with the words, “and the sons” which means “and the male offspring and progeny” “of the singers” or “belonging to the ones who make music with their voices” “gathered themselves together” which means “assembled with one another”. Nehemiah shared how the male offspring of the ones who made music with their voices assembled with one another.

The verse continues, “... both out of the plain country round about Jerusalem, and from the villages of Netophathi;” Nehemiah added the words, “both out of the plain country” or “from the environs of the Jordan valley, tract or region”“round about Jerusalem” which means “circumjacent to and surrounding Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”, “and from the villages of Netophathi” or “and separate and apart from the towns and settled abodes belonging to Netophathi whose name means dropping”. Nehemiah shared how the “sons of the singers” assembled from the regions of the Jordan valley and the settled abodes belonging to “Neophathi”.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about the offspring of the “singers” who came together from the areas circumjacent to “Jerusalem”. All of them were to serve with the music of their voices during the “dedication” of the barrier wall that surrounded the city. The people of Israel were being reestablished within their homeland, and each of these celebrations were intended to give glory and honor to Jehovah God. God deserves our praise and honor, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead three days later, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and beckon us to “gather together”to give Him praise and thanks both on earth and throughout eternity.

Next time Nehemiah shares about more of the places from which the sons of the singers were called, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
