Azariah, Ezra and Meshullam - Nehemiah 12:33

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “I brought up the princes of Judah upon the wall, and appointed two great companies of them that gave thanks, whereof one went on the right hand upon the wall toward the dung gate, and after them went Hoshaiah, and half of the princes of Judah, ...”, and in chapter twelve and verse thirty-three of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam” where we read,

And Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam,

The verse reads, “and Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam, ...” Nehemiah began with the word, “and Azariah” whose name means “Jehovah has helped”, “Ezra” or “help” and was “the priest and scribe who led the reforms of the returned exiles in Jerusalem and the co-worker with Nehemiah”, “and Meshullam” whose name means “friend”. Nehemiah shared how “Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam” were also among the spiritual leaders who joined in the dedication of the barrier wall surrounding Jerusalem.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah that “Azariah, Ezra, and Meshullam” whose names mean, “Jehovah has helped, help and friend” joined the other spiritual leaders who were to be involved in the giving of praise and thanks for the barrier wall. This was a special event which celebrated not only the building of the barrier wall, but also honored God who brought them back into their homeland. God wants us to be in His Kingdom as well, and when we submit to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was resurrected from the dead three days afterward, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and involve us in His Kingdom where we shall serve Him forever and ever more.
