In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “the priests; Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Michaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with trumpets”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-two of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared more of the names of the ministers where we read,
And Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan,
and Malchijah, and Elam, and Ezer. And the singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their overseer.
The verse reads, “And Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “and Maaseiah” whose name means “work of Jehovah and was a priest of the sons of Harim who had taken a foreign wife in the time of Ezra”, “and Shemaiah” or “heard by Jehovah”, “and Eleazar” whose name means “God has helped”, “and Uzzi” or “strong”, “and Jehohnan” whose name means “Jehovah has graced”. Nehemiah shared how, “Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan” were among the spiritual leaders who gave praise and thanksgiving to God at the barrier wall.
The verse continues, “... and Malchijah, and Elam, and Ezer. And the singers sang loud, with Jezrahiah their overseer. ” Nehemiah added the words, “and Malchijah” or Malchiah whose name means “my king is Jehovah”, “and Elam” whose name means “eternity”, “and Ezer” or “treasure”. “And the singers sang loud” which means “and the ones who made music with their voices proclaimed with power and roaring song”, “with Jezrahiah” or “alongside Jezrahiah whose name means Jehovah will shine” “their overseer” which means “their, the singers' commissioner, deputy and officer”. Nehemiah shared the names of the “singers”, “ Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan, and Malchijah, and Elam, and Ezer”, who used their voices to “sing aloud” and whom “Jezrahiah” led.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah the names of the singers who used their voices in song in a “loud” manner at the dedication of the barrier wall. These men were commissioned to carry out their portion of the celebration, and when we receive God's Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead three days later as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of using the gifts His Holy Spirit gives us to bless and honor Him and others for all eternity.
Next time Nehemiah shares how the priests, “offered great sacrifices”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
