In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited”, and in chapter twelve and verse forty-five of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared more about, “the singers and the porters” where we read,
And both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.
The verse reads, “And both the singers and the porters kept the ward of their God, and the ward of the purification, ...”Nehemiah began with the words, “and both the singers” which means “and the men making music with their voices” “and the porters” or “and the doorkeepers, janitors or gatekeepers” “kept the ward of their God” which means “guarded, observed and took heed to the obligation, service, watch and charge belonging to their Supreme Deity”, “and the ward of the purification” or “and the obligation, service, watch and charge belonging to their moral cleansing and purity”. Nehemiah shared how the “singers and porters” gave heed to and observed their obligation to their cleansing and to Jehovah God.
The verse goes on to say, “... according to the commandment of David, and of Solomon his son.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “according to the commandment of David” or “in keeping with the law, ordinance and precept belonging to David whose name means beloved and was the son of Jesse and the second king of Israel”, “and of Solomon his son”which means “and belonging to Solomon whose name means peace and was David's male offspring and progeny. Nehemiah said the “singers and porters” performed their watches in keeping with the law of “David” and his son “Solomon”.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about the responsibilities of the “singers and porters” who were assigned duties in the temple of Jerusalem. Each group watched over their areas in keeping with the direction and instruction that was put into effect by King “David” of Israel and his son “Solomon”. God's order was in place, and each of these people were important in the ministry within His temple. God wants all of us to be involved in His Kingdom, and when we believe and trust in His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead three days later, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us keep and watch over our areas of service and ministry by the aid of the power of His Holy Spirit.
Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the days of David and Asaph”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
