In the book of Daniel, Daniel said, “now God had brought Daniel into favor and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall you make me endanger my head to the king”, and in chapter one and verse eleven Daniel said, “then said Daniel to Melzar” where we read,
Then said Daniel to Melzar,
whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, ...
The verse reads, “Then said Daniel to Melzar, ...” Daniel began with the words, “then said Daniel” which means “at that time uttered, declared and proclaimed” “to Melzar” or “to Melzar whose name means guardian and was an officer of the court or the butler within the Babylonian court”. Daniel proclaimed to “Melzar” who was according to the following.
The verse continues, “... whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, ...” Daniel added the words, “whom the prince of the eunuchs” which means “that the ruler, leader, chief, chieftain and official belonging to the castrated valets or chamberlains, Ashpenaz” “had set over Daniel” or “had placed, fixed or established as an overseer to Daniel whose name means God is my judge”, “Hananiah” whose name means “God has favored”, “Mishael” or “who is what God is”, “and Azariah” whose name means “Jehovah has helped”. Daniel referred to “Melzar” as the official who was appointed by “Ashpenaz” the chief of the eunuchs to be the overseer of “ Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah” and said to him the words in our next verse.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Daniel about another character in this story about the Hebrew children. “Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah” were overseen by a man named “Melzar” who was appointed by “Ashpenaz” to this position. Even though the events seemed natural, God was directing people into His plan. God's desire was to redeem mankind through His Son Jesus who was sent to the earth to die on the cross for the sins of everyone, and He raised Jesus from the dead after three days so all who put their faith and trust in Him might be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and be given His Holy Spirit who will help them know He is in control even when new people enter their lives.
Next time Daniel says, “prove your servants … ten days”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
