Luke the beloved physician wrote how the religious leaders took Jesus, “and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. And after a little while another saw him, and said, you are also of them”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse fifty-nine of his book Luke shared how a third person recognized Peter where we read:
And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying,
Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.
The verse reads, “And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, …” Luke began with the words, “and about the space of one hour after” or “and around one half of an hour after the second maiden identified Peter” “another confidently affirmed” which means “one other person asserted stoutly and with assurance”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how “another” person identified Peter with great assurance and confidence as he proclaimed the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.” Luke continued with the words, “of a truth” which means “by greatest reality, fact and certainty” “this fellow also” which means “this even so and indeed” “was with him” or “was alongside Jesus”: “for he is a Galilaean” which means “because, since and on account that this man originates, is a native of and emanates from the area of Galilee”. Luke shared how this third man who identified Peter with certainty knew he was a native of “Galilee”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn about this third person who not only identified Peter, but also did so with great confidence. This man knew Peter was from “Galilee”, and therefore he concluded Peter was one of Jesus' disciples. Peter tried to secretly sit among the “fire” with the multitude, but he was unable to conceal himself. No one can, and those who are wise will understand that God knows every place they are, what they think and what they do. (See Psalm 139) God sent His Son Jesus to be the “Savior and Lord” of every person who yields their life to Him, and when they do, He will forgive them of their sins and give them everlasting life. Let all who read these words know God knows them, loves them and desires to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. .
Next time Luke shares how, “Peter said, Man, I know not what you say”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
