Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse nine of his book Luke shared how Herod, “questioned” Jesus “in many words; but he answered him nothing” where we read:
Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
The verse reads, “Then he questioned with him in many words;” Luke began with the words, “then he questioned with him” or “at that time Herod inquired of and interrogated by request or demand of Jesus” “in many words” which means “with a lot of speeches, decrees, mandates, saying and orders”. Luke shared how “Herod” asked Jesus a lot of questions and used a lot of “words” to do so.
The verse goes on to say, “but he answered him nothing.” Luke continued with the words, “but he answered him” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Jesus did not responded Herod” “nothing” or “not one thing”. Luke shared how Jesus did not respond in any way to “Herod”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we discover how “Herod” interrogated Jesus when He was before him. Regardless of how many “questions” “Herod” asked, Jesus would not answer him. “Herod Antipas” was the same “Herod” who killed “John the Baptist”, and we can only imagine how Jesus felt about him personally, so Jesus would not respond to anything “Herod” said. God knows every person, and He sent Jesus to “save” everyone who will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. “Herod” went too far and never submitted to Jesus, and he shall pay for it for all eternity. Let all who carefully consider this part of Jesus' story of “salvation” understand the importance of submitting to Jesus Christ.
Next time we see Luke shares how, “the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
