A Superscription Over Jesus - Luke 23:38

Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus was hanging on the cross, He said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, and saying, If you be the king of the Jews, save yourself”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse thirty-eight of his book Luke shared how, “a superscription also was written over” Jesus where we read:

And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew,

THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

The verse reads, “And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, ... Luke began with the words, “and a superscription or “and an inscription and title” “also was written over him” which means “even so and indeed was delineated and formed in letters on a plaque or tablet” “in letters of Greek” or “in written characters belonging to the Grecian or Hellenic language”, “and Latin” which means “of Rome's strength and the language spoken by the Romans”, “and Hebrew” or “and the Hebraic or Jewish language”. Luke shared how there was a “title” delineated in letters in three different languages, “Greek, Latin and Hebrew” with the following words.

The verse goes on to say, “... THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Luke added the words, “THIS IS THE KING” which means “This man exists as the leader, prince, commander and lord” “OF THE JEWS” or “belonging to the Jewish nation and people”. Luke shared how the title or inscription written over Jesus was that He was the Jews' King.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus had a “title or inscription” written that was placed over His head on the cross which declared He was the Jews' King. This statement could not have been more true, and because it was so important, it was delineated in the three most common languages in that area. Jesus is the “King of the Jews”, and He is the “King of King” and “Lord of Lords”. Those who are wise will believe and trust in Him as their personal “Lord and Savior”, and when they do, they shall be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God.

Next time Luke shares how, “one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
