What Things? - Luke 24:19

Luke the beloved physician wrote after women told the disciples about Jesus being raised from the dead, “Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulcher; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that you have one to another, as you walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse nineteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus said unto them, “what things?” where we read:

And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth,

which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

The verse reads, “And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, ... Luke began with the words, “And he said unto them or “and Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked the two disciples”, “What things” which means “what are the things about which you speak”? “and they said unto him” or “and the two disciples uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”, “Concerning Jesus” which means “about the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “of Nazareth” or “from the village of Nazareth which means one separated”. Luke shared how Jesus asked the two disciples “what things” they were discussing, and the two disciples told Him it was about “Jesus” who was from the village of “Nazareth”.

The verse continues, “... which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:” Luke added the words, “which was a prophet” which means “who existed as one moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman, solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation” “mighty in deed” or “strong, powerful and able to do great works, acts and labors” “and word before God” which means “and speech or uttered voice in front and in the presence of the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “and all the people” or “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the human beings both male and female”. Luke shared how the two disciples told Jesus that “Jesus” was a “powerful prophet” who was not only strong in “works and acts” but also delivered authoritative and inspirational “words” to all the “people” in His presence.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus pretended He did not know what the two disciples were discussing as they walked toward “Emmaus”. Their response was to “help” Jesus know. Can we imagine this? These two disciples were informing “God” who knows all things, and yet, Jesus allowed them to tell Him. God desires a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and even when they think they are “informing” Him, He is patient and wants them to yield their lives to Him. Those who are wise will submit to Jesus and allow Him to care for everything they cannot see or perceive.

Next time Luke shares how “Cleopas” tells Jesus, “the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
