Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “there was a man named Joseph, a counselor; and he was a good man, and a just. (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulcher that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse fifty-five of his book Luke shared how, “the women also … followed after, and beheld the sepulcher, and how his body was laid” where we read:
And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after,
and beheld the sepulcher, and how his body was laid.
The verse reads, “And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, ...” Luke began with the words, “And the women also” or “and the female human beings even so and indeed”, “which came with him” which means “who assembled and accompanied Joseph” “from Galilee” or “separate from and away from Galilee which means circuit and was the name of a region of northern Palestine, bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel, on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan”, “followed after” which means “accompanied closely”. Luke shared how the “women from Galilee” who accompanied Joseph did the following.
The verse continues, “... and beheld the sepulcher, and how his body was laid.” Luke added the words, “and beheld the sepulcher” which means “and looked upon, observed and considered the tomb or grave”, “and how his body was laid” or “and in what way Jesus' physical body was place and laid down”. Luke shared how the “women” who accompanied Joseph observed the “tomb” where Jesus' body was laid and how it was placed there.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how there were “women” who “accompanied” Joseph as He placed Jesus' body in the tomb. These were the “women” who ministered to Jesus as He went about serving people, and now, He was dead. Their hearts must have been so sad as they watched Joseph lay Jesus' body down, and they desired to do something about their passion. God wants people to understand all He did for them when His Son Jesus suffered and died for their sins. Because Jesus endured all these things, people may now be saved. Forgiveness of sins is available to everyone who believes and trusts in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and God promises to grant everlasting life to them when they die. Let all who read these words consider the hearts of these “women” and allow the Lord to produce the same passion in them that was in these women.
Next time Luke shares how the women, “returned, and prepared spices and ointments”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
