The Two Disciples Could Not See - Luke 24:16

Luke the beloved physician wrote after women told the disciples about Jesus being raised from the dead, “Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulcher; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse sixteen of his book Luke shared how the two disciples, “eyes were holden that they should not know him” where we read:

But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

The verse reads, “But their eyes were holden ... Luke began with the words, “But their eyes or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the women's physical eyes”, “were holden” which means “were seized, held in check and restrained”. Luke shared how Jesus' two disciples were unable to “see or perceive” Him.

The verse goes on to say, “... that they should not know him” Luke continued with the words, “that they should not know” which means “so Jesus' two disciples were unable to perceive, take knowledge of or be thoroughly acquainted with” “him” which refers to “Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus' two disciples did not “know or perceive” who He was.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how these two disciples of Jesus did not know who He was. Even though Jesus was with them, walking with them and traveling with them, they did not know it was Him. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and even though a person does not “see” Him, He is present everywhere. Paul the apostle wrote, in him we live, and move, and have our being” (See Acts 17:28), and though we cannot “perceive” Him with our eyes, He is present with us and wants us to believe in His Son Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord”. This is where “faith” comes in, and all who “believe” in Him shall be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Our question should be, “do we believe even though we cannot see?”

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asked the two disciples, “what manner of communications are these that you have one to another?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
