Pilate Sentences Jesus to Death - Luke 23:24

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Pilate said of Jesus, “I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof you accuse him. No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him. I will therefore chastise him, and release him. (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas. (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.) Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spoke again to them. But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil has he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse twenty-four of his book Luke shared how, “Pilate gave sentence that it should be” where we read:

And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

The verse reads, “And Pilate gave sentence ... Luke began with the words, “and Pilate whose name means “armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria” “gave sentence” which means “adjudged, approved and decreed” according to the following action. Luke shared how “Pilate” finally “adjudged and decreed” the following upon Jesus.

The verse goes on to say, “... that it should be as they required. Luke continued with the words, “that it should be” which means “that the decree, mandate and judgment was to come into existence” “as they required or “like and in the manner the multitude and religious leaders” demanded, craved and desired. Luke shared how “Pilate” decided that Jesus was to be “crucified” like the crowd desired.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how “Pilate” finally capitulated, and condemned Jesus to be crucified. Though he appealed three different times to the “religious leaders and multitude”, his desire could not “prevail” over theirs. God sent His Son Jesus to die for the sins of all mankind, and the fulfillment of this plan was near at hand. Jesus was to be “crucified”, and “Pilate” gave the final word. Every person will judge who Jesus is for themselves, and they choose whether Jesus will be their Lord and Savior or not. Let all who read these words choose wisely.

Next time we see Luke shares how Pilate, “released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
