Luke the beloved physician wrote, “when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse ten of his book Luke shared how, “the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him” where we read:
And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.
The verse reads, “And the chief priests and scribes stood …” Luke began with the words, “and the chief priests” or “and the high and principal priests” “and scribes” which means “and men who learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings and served as interpreters and teachers” “stood” or “arose, upheld and set in place” the following action. Luke shared how the “religious leaders” “stood up” and continued the following against Jesus.
The verse continues, “... and vehemently accused him.” Luke added the words, “ and vehemently” which means “and forcibly, mightily and in a well-strung manner” “accused him” or “made accusations against and charged Jesus with offenses and crimes”. Luke shared how the “religious leaders” “forcibly” “charged” Jesus with “offenses and crimes”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “religious leaders” continued to “accuse” Jesus of various “offenses and crimes” which they determined justified Jesus' death. They wanted Jesus to die, and this was befitting to God's plan to save mankind. God loves everyone, and only those who believe and trust in His Son Jesus will receive forgiveness of their sins and everlasting life with God. Everyone who reads these words should carefully consider how they “judge” Jesus, because their assessment will determine their eternal state.
Next time we see Luke shares how, “Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
