Is Jesus a Galilaean? - Luke 23:6

Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate. And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. And Pilate asked him, saying, Are you the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, You said it. Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse six of his book Luke shared how Pilate asked, “whether the man were a Galilaean” where we read:

When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.

The verse reads, “When Pilate heard of Galilee, ... Luke began with the words, “when Pilate or “at the time and moment Pilate whose name means armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria”, “heard of Galilee” which means “was given the faculty of hearing, perceived, notice and discerned pertaining to Galilee which means circuit and was the region of northern Palestine, bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel, on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan”. Luke shared how “Pilate” understood that Jesus was from the “Galilee” area.

The verse continues, “... he asked whether the man were a Galilaean. Luke added the words, “he asked” which means “he, Pilate, inquired and questioned as to” “whether the man” or “if the male human being, Jesus” “were a Galilaean” which means “native of Galilee”. Luke shared how “Pilate” questioned whether Jesus was a “native” of the “Galilee” region.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Pilate” responded to the more “fierce” accusations from the religious leaders and the crowd after they told Him that Jesus taught all over the “Galilee” area. This caused “Pilate” to question whether Jesus was from the “Galilee” area because this would make Him a “Galilaean” which was out of “Pilate's” jurisdiction. We shall see how “Pilate” responds after this question in our next verse, but suffice it for now to know this was all part of God's plan of “salvation” for mankind. Those who carefully consider each of these details should submit their lives to Jesus Christ who endured all these “accusations” on their behalf.

Next time we see Luke shares when Pilate, “knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
