Luke the beloved physician wrote about the women who knew Jesus, “upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek you the living among the dead?He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words, ...”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse nine of his book Luke shared how the women, “returned from the sepulcher, and told all these things unto the eleven” where we read:
And returned from the sepulcher, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
The verse reads, “And returned from the sepulcher, ...” Luke began with the words, “and returned” or “and went back”, “from the sepulcher” which means “separate and apart from the tomb or grave where Jesus was buried and was risen”. Luke shared how the women left from the “tomb” where Jesus was buried and went to the area of their homes.
The verse continues, “... and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.” Luke added the words, “and told all these things” which means “and brought tidings, word, report and proclamation” “unto the eleven” or “to the eleven disciples of Jesus”, “and to all the rest” which means “and to everyone else who was with the eleven disciples”. Luke shared how the women went back to the “eleven disciples” and told them and those with them what the angels said.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn what the women did after the “angels” reminded them about Jesus' words. Jesus was risen from the dead, and the news needed to be spread. The “gospel” or “good news” of God's salvation was to be given to everyone who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus. Let all who read these words know, believe and promote the “good news” of Jesus Christ who is the risen “Savior” of the world.
Next time Luke shares about, “Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
