Luke the beloved physician wrote about the women who knew Jesus, “upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse five of his book Luke shared how the women, “as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek you the living among the dead?” where we read:
And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them,
Why seek ye the living among the dead?
The verse reads, “And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, ...” Luke began with the words, “and as they were afraid” or “and while and during the time the women who came to anoint Jesus' body were fearful, terrified and affrighted”, “and bowed down their faces” which means “and declined their, the women's, physical faces” “to the earth” or “toward the ground”, “they said unto them” which means “the two angels uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following words. Luke shared how the women were “terrified” at the site of the “two angels”, bent their physical faces to the ground and the angels began to ask the following words.
The verse continues, “... Why seek you the living among the dead?” Luke added the word, “why seek you” which means “for what reason and cause do you women look for, strive, demand and require” “the living among the dead” or “the live, active, powerful and efficacious alongside and with the non-living, inanimate, not breathing, lifeless and inanimate”? Luke shared how the “two angels” asked the women what was their reason for looking for the “alive” in the location of the “dead”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “two angels” addressed the women who were perplexed, in doubt and terrified because Jesus' body was missing. These “angels” had news for the women, and they began to share their information by asking “why” they were looking for the “living among the dead”. In other words, Jesus was not there. He was alive. The angels will share this message in our next verse, but suffice it for now for us to know God's plan of salvation for mankind was unfolding just as He said. Jesus is alive and has defeated hell and death (See Revelation 1:18), and those who put their faith and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life from God. Let all who read these words answer the angels' question, “Why seek you the living among the dead?”
Next time Luke shares how the two men in shining garments tell the women, “He is not here, but is risen”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
