Luke the beloved physician wrote about the women who knew Jesus, “upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse two of his book Luke shared how the women, “found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher” where we read:
And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher.
The verse reads, “And they found the stone ...” Luke began with the words, “and they found” or “and the women discover, learned, and understood that”, “the stone” which means “the huge rock which was placed over the tomb of Jesus” was according to the following. Luke shared how the women who were going to Jesus' tomb to anoint His body discovered the “stone” covering the entrance of His tomb was as follows.
The verse goes on to say, “... rolled away from the sepulcher.” Luke continued with the words, “rolled away” which means “rolled off or apart” “from the sepulcher” or “and separated from the tomb or grave”. Luke shared how the “stone” covering Jesus' tomb was “rolled away” from blocking the entrance.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the women who went to anoint the body of Jesus with their “spices and ointments” discovered the “stone” which blocked the entrance to His tomb was “rolled away”. Along the way they wondered how the “stone” could be moved. (See Mark 16:3), and when they arrived, it was already moved. God knew the hearts of these women, and He understood their grief, and now they were adding the fact that the “stone” was mysteriously moved from it's place. God's plan of “salvation” for mankind was being completed, and the women shall find Jesus is not in His tomb. He is risen, and every person who believes and trusts in Him shall be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life. Let all who read these words know and believe – the “stone” was “rolled away” because Jesus was not there!
Next time Luke shares how the women, “entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
