Luke the beloved physician wrote how the religious leaders took Jesus, “and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. And after a little while another saw him, and said, you are also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean. And Peter said, Man, I know not what you are saying. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, you shall deny me three times”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse sixty-two of his book Luke shared how, “Peter went out, and wept bitterly” where we read:
And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
The verse reads, “And Peter went out, ...” Luke began with the words, “and Peter” whose name means “a little rock or stone and was a disciple of Jesus” “went out” which means “left, departed and got out of there”. Luke shared how Peter left the multitude gathered around the fire after Jesus looked him in the eye and he remembered what Jesus said.
The verse goes on to say, “... and wept bitterly.” Luke continued with the words, “and wept” which means “and mourned, lamented, grieved, bewailed and sobbed” “bitterly” which means “with poignant grief ”. Luke shared how Peter grievously cried and sobbed.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Peter responded to the “gaze” of Jesus. No doubt Peter could not believe himself as he failed to keep his word to Jesus. Jesus knew Peter would deny Him, but Peter didn't. God knows the limitations of every person, and He is willing to “gaze” into their hearts so they may see what He sees. Those who are wise will submit themselves to Jesus as their personal “Lord and Savior” and relinquish all pride concerning their own abilities at His feet.
Next time Luke shares how, “the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
